Bundala is the first wetland to be declared as a Ramsar site in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve is an internationally acclaimed and vital wintering ground for migratory birds in Sri Lanka. The park nurtures 324 species of vertebrates comprising 32 species of fish, 15 species of amphibians, 48 species of reptiles, 32 species of mammals, and 52 species of butterflies primarily due to the availability of five shallow lagoons within the national park.
