Amid Geopolitical Tensions, Global Tourism Industry Demonstrates Resilience and Determination to Forge Ahead
The 60th anniversary edition of ITB Berlin officially opened at the CityCube Berlin, reaffirming its role as the world’s leading travel trade show and a vital platform for direction, dialogue, and international partnership during uncertain times.
At the opening press conference, Messe Berlin CEO Dr. Mario Tobias, Angola’s Minister of Tourism Márcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel, President Albin Loidl, and Mitra Sorrells, Senior Vice President Content at the US market research institute Phocuswright, addressed the pressing challenges and opportunities shaping global tourism. Central to their message was the industry’s unwavering commitment to stability, innovation, and cooperation despite mounting geopolitical pressures.
The panel expressed concern over the recent developments in Iran and the wider region, emphasizing solidarity with those affected. Dr. Tobias noted that the industry’s thoughts were with impacted communities and confirmed ongoing communication with exhibitors and participants. Loidl reiterated that the safety and security of travelers and employees remain paramount, with tour operators closely monitoring the evolving situation and hoping for de-escalation through diplomatic channels. The circumstances, speakers observed, underscore both the interconnectedness and fragility of the global tourism ecosystem.
Placing the milestone edition into strategic context, Dr. Tobias stressed that ITB Berlin serves as a compass in times marked by geopolitical tensions, rapid technological change, and increasing sustainability demands. Under the theme “Leading Tourism into Balance,” the ITB Berlin Convention highlights resilient business models, sustainable growth pathways, and the responsible integration of emerging technologies.
With nearly 6,000 exhibitors from more than 160 countries, the show once again demonstrates its unmatched global reach and influence. Tobias also highlighted enhanced digital services, innovative networking formats, and ITB’s continued international expansion, including the launch of ITB Americas in Guadalajara, Mexico, later this year — a clear signal that, even in challenging times, the industry is moving forward with confidence and purpose.
