A powerful late-month surge in tourist arrivals during May propelled Sri Lanka’s cumulative visitor count pass the one-million mark for the year, achieving this feat within the first 28 days of the month.
According to the latest data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the year-to-date arrivals from January 01 to May 28 reached 1,010,807 visitors.

While crossing the million mark earlier than the previous year, the cumulative figure reflects a marginal year-on-year contraction of 0.61 percent when compared to the 1,017,004 arrivals recorded during the identical January 01 to May 28 period in 2025. This tightening gap highlights a strengthening arrival recovery baseline for the industry as the global travel patterns normalise and regional connectivity improves.

The primary catalyst for reaching this milestone was an aggressive influx of visitors in the fourth week of the month, lifting the total arrivals for the May 01 to 28 period to 134,530. By calculating the exact corresponding timeframes, this performance translates to a robust YoY growth of 12.0 percent, against the 120,120 arrivals recorded during the first 28 days of May 2025.

Furthermore, the sector recorded a solid month-on-month growth of 7.34 percent when compared to the 125,333 visitors welcomed during the corresponding first 28 days of April 2026. This sequential expansion was heavily supported by the opening up of the regional airspace, which normalised the airline operations and stabilised visitor traffic. While the daily arrivals started strong, with 5,656 on May 01, the market experienced a massive spike between May 22 and May 28, drawing in 40,699 tourists in just seven days. This late-month wave was driven by single-day peaks of 7,310 arrivals on May 23 and 6,350 arrivals on May 24, pushing the average daily arrival rate for May to 4,805 visitors, up from the full-month daily average of 4,521 seen in April. An analysis of the country-of-origin breakdown reveals diverse market trajectories, dominated by an exceptional performance from the regional superpower. India retained its position as the top source market, contributing 56,063 arrivals during the 28 days of May to capture a commanding 42.0 percent market share. This performance reflects a substantial increase in daily velocity compared to April, where India registered 42,645 total tourists over the entire 30 days, boosting its daily average by 40.89 percent from 1,421 in April to 2,002 in May.

Meanwhile, the traditional long-haul European markets showed mild seasonal corrections. The United Kingdom ranked second, with 8,582 arrivals or a 6.0 percent share, showing a slight dip in daily intensity to 306 visitors from April’s average of 347. China followed in third, with 8,439 tourists, averaging 301 daily arrivals against April’s average of 351.

Conversely, Germany demonstrated resilience, as its total of 6,443 visitors raised its daily average to 230 tourists, from 184 in April. Australia rounded out the top five source markets, with 5,868 tourists, though its daily average softened to 209 visitors, from the 331 recorded during the prior month.
