At Whittalls Travels, sustainability is not just practice, it’s a purpose. As part of our continued commitment to environmental stewardship and community upliftment, we proudly supported a transformative Environmental Awareness Workshop organized by Forest Department of Sri Lanka, held on the 26th and 27th of May 2025 near the Sinharaja Forest Reserve.

This workshop, part of a three-session educational series, brought together students from five under-resourced schools. The sessions were conducted free of charge by a group of passionate environmental experts who generously volunteered their time to educate and inspire.

Topics covered over the two days included:

  • Biodiversity of rainforests and Evolution of endemic species
  • Sri Lanka’s environmental laws and their practical application
  • Ecological roles of reptiles and amphibians
  • Aquatic biodiversity and field-based ecological observations
  • Marine and coastal biodiversity and its distribution
  • Freshwater ecosystems and their conservation
  • Sustainable fisheries and local food webs

These interactive sessions combined field exploration with classroom-based learning, aiming to instill a deep appreciation for Sri Lanka’s unique ecosystems and a sense of responsibility among the youth.

We took a step further in supporting the program by jointly sponsoring nutritious meals for the participating students and facilitators throughout the workshop. Our collective contribution ensured that these young participants not only had access to quality environmental education but were also well cared for during their experience.

We extend our sincere thanks to our partners, the Forest Department and the dedicated facilitators who made this initiative a success. We remain committed to promoting responsible tourism and nurturing the next generation of environmental champions.
