The Sustainable Niche Tourism Learning Expo in Galle, facilitated by USAID and SLTDA, received praise from small tourism business owners for its informative and enriching content. Attracting over 100 stakeholders, the event, part of a series across Sri Lanka, covered digital marketing, sustainability, and travel trends. Following the introduction of 12 niche tourism categories in June, the expo aimed to enhance small businesses’ competitiveness, bolster Sri Lanka’s brand identity, and foster economic growth through tourism. Recognizing tourism’s pivotal role, especially post-pandemic and amid economic challenges, the event highlighted the sector’s resurgence.

Pre-pandemic, tourism contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s GDP and employment. The country’s diverse tourism offerings, amplified by the new niche categories, aim to attract international and domestic travelers. The expo’s innovative approaches garnered appreciation, steering traditional tourism perspectives toward contemporary strategies. Additionally, it emphasized niche tourism’s role in fostering inclusivity for marginalized groups.
USAID’s involvement through the Indo-Pacific Opportunity Project (IPOP) showcases its commitment to supporting economic reforms and attracting foreign investment in Sri Lanka’s tourism sector. The expo stands as a positive stride towards revitalizing Sri Lanka’s tourism and overall economic recovery.
