The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Indo Pacific Opportunity Project (IPOP) and the Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance (SLTA) have initiated a social media influencer campaign aimed at revitalizing Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. A team of ten global influencers with substantial followings in key tourism source markets will travel to various picturesque locations across the country, highlighting sustainable niche tourism products and cultural attractions. Tourism plays a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s economy, representing 12% of its GDP pre-pandemic and generating $4.3 billion in revenue in 2018.

The country recently achieved a significant milestone, welcoming over one million tourists in 2023, surpassing the 2022 total. Ambassador Julie Chung, the Chief Guest at the campaign’s launch, lauded this increase, emphasizing the United States’ support for Sri Lanka’s economic stability. The campaign leverages social media influencers to promote Sri Lanka globally, attracting more visitors and contributing to the nation’s economic recovery. USAID’s IPOP tourism activity further supports this effort by streamlining policies to attract foreign direct investment in the tourism sector.
